Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Mexico on 20 March.

A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Missions Deployed

Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine total crew members, as stated by a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, medicines, baby formula, bicycles and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with more than 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Political measures have intensified lately, with comments from different representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to recent proposals, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
