The Oscar-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
The actor, whose roles featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. The news was shared via an announcement from her child, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with her mom in several movies like Wild at Heart, called her “my amazing hero and my precious gift as a mother”, writing that she was present as she died.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, performer, creative and caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Ladd’s early career featured small roles in television programs such as Gunsmoke whereas the 1970s saw her starring next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.
In the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow as well as humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on Alice, a sitcom based on her earlier movie.
During the next ten years, she earned a further best supporting actress nomination for her role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she played the mom of her biological child the character played by Dern. A year later she received an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured her daughter.
“This was the film that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she invited me and Laura to England for a premiere and an event for us,” Ladd shared of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and weeping, viewing our performance.”
The 1990s included parts in humorous films Cemetery Club reuniting her with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played Dern’s mother another time. That period also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
She continued to star alongside her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She also appeared with Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Her more recent television parts consisted of the series Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
She additionally penned and helmed the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck featuring her and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project.
