During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
