Britain's administration is experimenting with a fresh approach on Brexit, but this isn't equivalent to a change in direction. The adjustment is primarily tonal.
Previously, the Labour leadership described Britain's separation from Europe as a fixed element of the national situation, awkward to handle perhaps, but ultimately unavoidable. Currently, they are willing to acknowledge it as a serious problem.
Speaking at a local economic summit recently, the chancellor listed Brexit alongside the COVID-19 and spending cuts as causes of ongoing financial stagnation. She repeated this viewpoint during an IMF gathering in Washington, observing that the national efficiency issue has been worsened by the manner in which the UK left the European Union.
This represented a precisely formulated declaration, assigning damage not to the departure decision but to its implementation; faulting the politicians who negotiated it, not the public who supported it. This differentiation is essential when the financial plan is presented next month. The goal is to assign some fiscal difficulties to the deal negotiated by Boris Johnson without seeming to disrespect the hopes of leave voters.
Among evidence-focused observers, the economic argument is mostly resolved. An independent fiscal watchdog estimates that the UK's sustained output is four percent reduced than it could have been with continued EU membership.
In addition to the costs of trade friction, there has been a ongoing drop in business investment caused by political instability and regulatory ambiguity. Policy differences between the two parties are small, but the electorate observe interpersonal conflict more than shared beliefs. Those attracted to Nigel Farage due to lost faith in the system—particularly on border policy—do not view Reform and the Tories as similar entities. One party has a history of permitting entry, while Reform does not—a contrast their leader will repeatedly emphasize.
Farage is less eager to discuss Brexit, in part since it is a legacy shared with Conservatives and partly because there are no positive outcomes to highlight. Departure from the EU was equated with the pandemic as traumas endured by the public in the past period. Comparing Brexit to a disease signals a hardening of rhetoric, even if the financial steps currently under discussion in Brussels remain the same.
The aim is to link Farage to a notorious case of political mis-selling, implying he cannot be trusted; that he capitalizes on frustration and sows division but cannot manage effectively.
Recent suspensions of local representatives from the party's administrative wing supports that message. Leaked footage of a online meeting revealed internal squabbling and blame-shifting, highlighting the difficulties amateurs face when delivering public services on tight finances—far tougher than distributing leaflets about cutting waste or managing borders.
This line of attack is productive for the government, but it depends on the government's service delivery being sufficiently strong that electing Reform seems a dangerous experiment. Moreover, this is a message for a later election that may not occur until 2029. If the leadership wish to be seen as antidotes to Faragism, they must demonstrate in the interim with a clear, constructive program of their own.
There are limits to what is possible with a rhetorical shift, and the clock is ticking. It would be simpler to argue now that Brexit is an affliction and his promoter untrustworthy if they had stated this before. How many more options might they have? Do they merit praise for admitting it now when alternate justifications are exhausted? Yes. But the issue with arriving at the evident truth via the longest path is that observers wonder the procrastination. Starting from the truth is faster.
