Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
