New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized the former governor, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to support Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
