Inter forward Lautaro Martínez scored a second-half double to earn his team a 2-0 win at Pisa, ensuring the away side very much involved in the Serie A title race despite a less than convincing display.
Led by Cristian Chivu, Inter now sit third in the table with 27 points total, level with second-placed Roma and only one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa hold the 18th position with 10 points.
Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after enduring a loss to rivals by Milan recently, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were made to battle throughout by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts created plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez smacked a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The forward then finished from point-blank seven minutes from time.
The team’s ability to convert even with difficult circumstances proved decisive in securing the victory.
In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to level at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a late strike five minutes into stoppage time. Villarreal’s scoring came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the 30-minute mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea equalised three minutes from time. However, Moleiro delivered the final say deep into added time.
Later on La Liga match, Real Madrid journey to Girona needing a victory to return to the top ahead of Barcelona, who recorded a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on the previous day.
