New Year Revelers Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK

Meteorologists are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be low, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
