The state attorney general has rolled out a new digital platform asking locals to provide visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread outcry.
A lawmaker announced during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Rallies occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured federal operations yesterday, I encourage you to submit that material with us. We are pledged to reviewing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
The form provides spaces to submit visual evidence of the raid, along with a area to indicate where it occurred. When submitting, users must check a box that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty government officers, occurred in a well-known area of Manhattan where imitation products and additional items are sold daily widely – often to sightseers.
Recordings of the incident depict several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a person, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of residents followed the agents through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed moving along the city streets.
At a news conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four nationals were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a excuse to provoke conflict for the government to utilize the troops to prevent conflict that they initiated."
Fury over the federal action quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It has to end," a contender wrote.
The city's community groups voiced concern also.
"Federal officers descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, covered personnel and riot gear to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This action had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," stated the head of a rights organization.
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it will not apprehend American nationals. However, independent reporting has found that numerous American nationals have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
