Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
