Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
