The visionary game developer, the mind behind the wildly popular first-person shooter Call of Duty, has died in a car accident in Los Angeles, California at the age of 55.

Zampella's death was verified by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, the video game company he co-founded.

The influential industry figure lost his life when his vehicle was involved in a crash and caught fire on a motorway in the Los Angeles area on this past Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our deepest sympathies go to Vince's family, his family, and the countless individuals inspired by his work," an official with Electronic Arts stated.
