The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
