Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever viewed, nothing has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked ending of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, melancholy and frequently brutal world with several minor , forlorn glimmers of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to push animation further, the filmmaker stated that it was rather an attempt to express a universal, multicultural theme concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That idea is expressed by means of a squad of colorful pastel bears , obviously based on a famous line of lovable characters.
Growing up in a culture built around militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are consumed by exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that tells the bears they were once masters of the woods, before these creatures forced them out.
A few haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, , prefer to sample substances or fornicate in the woods.
In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals show sexual organs , definite sex drives.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the war with unicorns turns into a path to power — and specifically to dominance above his more tender, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , an apparent psychopath , and when fear dominates his group and claims his comrades one by one, he grabs progressively power on his own behalf, in increasingly bloody, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are enduring their own horror, in the form of a growing, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “But then it becomes a more serious and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most whimsical movies by a renowned animator, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting drawn beings curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Then it becomes more akin to a more grim work from that artist, featuring progressively explicit brutality and a tangible relation to the real horror of battle.
In the finale, it is a full-on extreme drama carnage.
The horror which makes this a Halloween-friendly watch begins well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of intense movies who desire to view a film they have not watched previously, and are able to withstand a story that offers absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dark room without any distractions, and that ending will dig under your skin and linger.
