The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
