The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they secure the expected passage for a championship taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the England side for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are set to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The tournament was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the venue by around fifty activists, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were held up with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a start time at late afternoon.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract family audiences and help connect with a wider spectrum of fans.
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena finalize the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches held at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“It will be a tournament for the supporters and a showcase of everything we love about the game – its fervor and capacity to foster unity.”
In excess of three million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to attendees.
